BACU's English Training Program

The British Applied College provides top-quality and affordable English language courses for learners in Umm Al Quwain and the region. There is an opportunity to learn English from the very beginning and eventually progress to the advanced levels. Native English and fluent speakers of English teach these courses.

 

This program includes seven levels that are aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) levels. Click here for more information on the CEFR level descriptors.

Our English Training Program follows a progressive format. Once students complete the level in which they enter, they progress to the next one.

​

  1. Starter [CEFR Starter] ENG 000: Knows the alphabet and sounds of the language. Understands first words, basic emergency questions, and how to respond to simple phrases and questions.

  2. Level 1 Beginner [CEFR A1.1 and A1.2] ENG 001: Understands and uses familiar everyday phrases. Conducts personal introductions and can ask and answer questions about personal details. Understands and responds to simple messages.

  3. Level 2 Elementary [CEFR A2.1 and A2.2] ENG 002: Understands sentences and frequently used expressions. Describes (in simple terms) aspects of their background and immediate environment.

  4. Level 3 Pre-Intermediate [CEFR B1.1 and B1.2] ENG 003: Understands the main points of a conversation (about work, school, leisure, travel). Produces simple connected text. Describes experiences and produces explanations for opinions and plans.

  5. Level 4 Intermediate [CEFR B1.3 and B1.4] ENG 004: Understands the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics. Interacts with a degree of fluency and spontaneity with native speakers.

  6. Level 5 Upper-Intermediate [CEFR B2.1 to B2.3] ENG 005: Understands a wide range of longer texts and recognizes implicit meaning. Uses fluent and spontaneous expression and can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic, and professional purposes.

  7. Level 6 Advanced [CEFR C1.1 to C2] ENG 006: Easily understands virtually everything heard or read. Very fluent and precise expression even in the most complex situations.

Program Learning Outcomes

Learners who successfully complete the entire English Language Program will be able to:

  1. Read texts with near-native fluency and grasp implicit meaning easily.

  2. Write expressive, detailed essays, reports, and other work they can be proud of.

  3. Speak with native-like fluency and clarity without regard to accent.

  4. Listen to any form of English expression with an instant understanding of meaning.

 

Levels Program Course Structure

     

      Beginner through Intermediate Levels

  • 4 periods per week (1 period = 1 hour)

  • 16 periods per month for 2 months; 32 periods total

  • Minimum Class Size: 10 students

 

      Upper-Intermediate and Advanced Levels

  • 4 periods per week (1 period = 1 hour)

  • 16 periods for 2 months; 8 periods for the final month

  • 2.5 months total (40 periods)

  • Minimum Class Size: 10 students

  • Course Syllabus provided

  • Textbook: Headway, Interchange, and other on-line resources

  • Study Plan: Similar to the front matter of the Headway or Interchange books

  • Assessments: Summative every four weeks
