INTERNET OF THINGS (IOT): A Mechanism to Transform Businesses

This course will look at the field of IoT, which is commonly understood to entail the inter-networking of devices in the physical world by fitting them with sensors and network-connected devices. While most courses today treat IoT as a technological topic, this course takes a different approach. IoT is not a technology, it’s a leadership opportunity; a mechanism to transform businesses. This program, therefore, aims to help people envision and lead IoT-based transformations, not just understand the technical elements. The goal is to expose IoT jargon so that managers can start to achieve the strategic advantage IoT makes possible.

Problem Solving & Decision Making

Anyone who aspires to excellence obviously has a vested interest in seeing that the best decisions are taken, that problems are solved in the optimum way and that the creative ideas and innovations so necessary for tomorrow’s business flow freely. One step towards that end that you should definitely take is to become master of the processes of practical thinking, the processes that lie behind all effective decision making, problem solving and creative thinking. This course will explore strategies for problem solving and decision making within organizations and working environments. There are three forms of applied thinking that we all need: decision making, problem solving and creative thinking. These overlap considerably but they can be distinguished. Decision making is about deciding what action to take; it usually involves choice between options.  The object of problem solving is usually a solution, answer or conclusion.  The outcome of creative thinking, by contrast, is new ideas.

Strategic Thinking & Planning

Strategy in the game of chess is all about positioning your own pieces to gain advantage.  The most advantageous positioning depends on the current positioning of your own pieces, the current positioning of your opponent’s pieces, the expected future positioning of your opponent’s pieces, and the desired future positioning of your own pieces.  Therefore, one needs to understand the implications of current positioning and have an idea of what positioning the opponent is likely to adopt in the future. Managing a firm is somewhat like playing chess.  The resources of the firm are like the pieces of a chess set.

This course is about positioning the resources of the firm with a view toward gaining competitive advantage and earning superior economic returns.

How to Adapt to Change?

It has become the accepted view that, for society at large, the magnitude, speed, unpredictability and impact of change are greater than ever before. Certainly, over the last 20 years especially, new products, processes and services have appeared at an ever-increasing rate. Local markets have become global markets. Protected or semiprotected markets and industries have been opened up to fierce competition. Public bureaucracies and monopolies have either been transferred to the private sector or have themselves adopted much more market-orientated practices. This program will describe and discuss the key approaches to and theories of organizational change, and  set these within the broader framework of the development, operation and behavior of organizations and those who populate them. The intention is to allow those who study and carry out organizational change to make their own judgments about the benefits, applicability and usefulness of the approaches on offer.

Principles and Practices of Internally Assured Quality of Assessments
Quality assessments are not just a checkmark; they're a culture.

This course allows participants to have deep understanding of internally assured quality of systems. Internal quality assurance (IQA) seeks to ensure that assessment activities have been conducted in a consistent, safe and fair manner.

A system must be in place to monitor all aspects of teaching, learning and assessment from when a learner commences to when they finish. It can also take place prior to the learner commencing i.e. monitoring the application and interview process, to after they have left i.e. following up on progression routes. IQA should not just take place at the end of a programme or when a learner completes - this is bad practice. An internal quality assurer's role is also to support staff and arrange for further training and development if necessary.
